Etain, Sotha Sil, and the others camped out high above the Barrow located above Ivarstead. The group wanted to know why Etain needed to make the traditional pilgrimage of reading the stones as they made their way to High Hrothgar. Etain replied to them, “Sit down, get comfortable and prepare yourselves for story time.”
They built the fire up and all sat down nearby the heat it provided to not only hear the story but see it through Etain’s new abilities to invoke a visual representation with the minds of each person listening to her.
Etain began, “First of all, the ten tablets etched along the way up the seven thousand steps is a spiritual and historical meditation. Not a mandatory rule enforced by the Greybeards. Each of the ten stone markers shares a piece of Nordic history, detailing how dragons once ruled Mundus, how early humans suffered under them, and the philosophical shift that followed the Dragon War.”
Etain paused then said, “Jurgen Windcaller’s Philosophy that the Greybeards follow called ‘The Way Of the Voice’ came into existence after he realized that the Thu’um should be used to worship the gods rather than to conquer others.”
Etain then told them, “The climbing the mountain is an ancient pilgrimage; Nordes believe mankind was breathed into existence by the goddess Kyne at the peak of the Throat Of The World which is the top of the mountain that sits high above High Hrothgar. Pausing to read the tables allows a pilgrim to align their mind with this philosophy. “
Etain said, “Let me talk to you about the writings on each stone. The first Emblem as they are called says ‘Before the birth of men, the Dragons ruled all Mundus. Their words were the voice, and they spoke only for True Needs. For the voice could blot out the sky and flood the land. This establishes the power that the voice has, it is not simply a language but a tonal architecture and even though the Dragons of old inscribed what are known as the Dragon Walls with many representations of these words, as you have seen with me, others can be formed and created by those who understand the tonal architecture of the sounds. “
Etain continued, “The second Emblem tells us that ‘Men were born and spread over the face of Mundus. The Dragons presided over the crawling masses. Men were weak then and had no Voice.’ This establishes the power of the Dragon Cult during the Merethic Era. They not only presided over the races but also each other with there being a sort of class hierarchy that existed amongst my brothers and sisters of that time. “
Etain said, “The third Emblem states that ‘The fledgling spirits of Men were strong in Old Times. Unafraid to war with Dragons and their Voices. But the Dragons only shouted them down and broke their hearts.’ Thus is the way of most dragons to control and command, to dominate others, even each other at time”
Etain then looked at Kyne’s Champion and said, ‘The next Emblem, the fourth one has inscribed on it ‘Kyne called on Paarthurnax, who pitied Man. Together they taught Men to use the Voice. Then the Dragon War raged, Dragon against Tongue.’ Paarthurnax who is the second son of Akatosh still lives upon the Throat Of The World where he meditates to control the worse impulses of the Dovah.”
Etain thought a moment than continued, “He will be there to help me with the Greybeards as our father Akatosh has already spoken to him about my coming. It is said he looks forward to discussing many things with she who is the first spark before time, meaning me. That is why I must go in alone at first as the formal structure of greeting and acknowledgement of each other can be quite long.”
Etain said, “The fifth Emblem states ‘Men prevailed, shouting Alduin out of the world. Proving for all that their Voice too was strong. Although their sacrifices were many-fold.’ Of course, my brother Alduin cannot be destroyed but rather was displaced among the winds of time. It took a long period before Alduin could discover a way to return. However, as you know he did and now is intent on his original plan to destroy the world and begin a new Kuppa, or a new world reimagined by him of course.”
Etain continued, “The sixth Emblem reads, ‘With roaring Tongues, the Sky-Children conquer. Founding the First Empire with Sword and Voice. Whilst the Dragons withdrew from this World.’ So, my brothers and sisters of old withdrew from this world and those humans who had learned some of the power of the Voice, took on a more conquering, traditional Nordic philosophy. “
Etain said, “This next one gets interesting, Emblem seven is written that ‘The Tongues at Red Mountain went away humbled. Jurgen Windcaller began his Seven-Year Meditation. To understand how Strong Voices could fail.’ This of course led in time to the discovery of ‘The Way Of The Voice’.
Etain continued, “Emblem eight is written that ‘Jurgen Windcaller chose silence and returned. The 17 Disputants could not shout Him down. Jurgen The Calm built his home of the Throat Of the World.’ That is what became High Hrothgar, the monastery where the Greybeards live. “
Etain said, “Now comes the final two, Emblem nine states, ‘For years all silent, the Graybeards spoke one name. Tiber Septim, stripling then, was summoned to Hrothgar. They blessed and named him Dohvakiin.’ The Nordic Patheon states that he was given the name, Ysmir – Dragon Of The North. He of course became an Emperor and ruled for many years thus helping to establish the blood of the Septims.”
Etain said, “Now come Emblem ten, ‘The Voice is worship. Follow The Inner Path. Speak only in True Need.’ Simple but powerful in its meaning that power is not meant to conquer but to uphold the rights of others to live a fulfilled and meaningful life. Thus, it is the foundation of the new age yet to come.”
Etain paused then said, “Tomorrow when we make the climb, I will stop at each stone, but I told you these stories tonight so that we may continue our journey to ascend to High Hrothgar and not prolong our time at each stone for meditation and insight to their meaning. Once we have reached the Monastery. All of you will need to set up camp behind the tenth Emblem. I will enter it and go and speak in the outdoor courtyard to the Greybeards with the help of my brother Paarthanax.”
Etain then looked over at Rosenlyn and said,” Come sister, I need my rest and my dearest friend to help watch over me while we get rested for tomorrow. We will leave at first light. I expect Sotha Sil will leave us at that time. Once I enter the Monastery, Sotha will go to let the mages know it is time for them to come. They will wait with you for my return from inside of High Hrothgar. “
The night was uneventful and morning came. Etain was up early along with Rosenlyn, and they were both working through their exercises of “The Way” the ancient pattern of passive and offensive exchange that reflected Etain’s desire to disable but not kill her opponents in battle if possible.
As others woke up and joined the breakfast at the campfire they watched as these two danced through their exercise of push and pull, defend and attack, always circling each other, always respectful of the other. The Khajiit were always thrilled to watch these ancient traditions being demonstrated.
The dance ended and they bowed to each other. Afterwards the exchanged places with each other so Etain could be of service to Rosenlyn helping her to put on her armor and weapons for the day. Then Rosenlyn assisted Etain with hers.
Afterwards they came over and joined the others. Both drank some steaming hot tea and took a few bites of cheese and bread then Etain said, “The day will begin soon, and I would not want the town to wake up to this group of strangers wondering through their town to begin the pilgrimage up to High Hrothgar. Shall we be on our way!”
The group quickly cleaned up the campsite and returned the land to how it was before their arrival. They made their way down and around to come out near the logging mill and bridge that led across to the first Emblem. Etain turned to them and said, “Everyone stays together on this pilgrimage. No scouting is necessary. I will lead the way.” The walked across the bridge and arrived at the first stone. As Etain approached it, hidden runes etched deep within its stone came alive.
It was unexpected as it was reacting to Etain and the same way that the Standing Stones had. Rosenlyn immediately panicked and rushed forward to Etain, Etain was caught in a trance, and they all witnessed the echoes of thousands of years of pilgrims who had come before making their way up the path.
The Emblem resonated a tone, a note that rang and echoed across the surrounding area. A bright light spread outward. Celestine and Delphine were at her side with weapons drawn as no one expected this to happen including Etain.
People in the town were all rushing out their homes and the local Vilemyr Inn. All pointed to the path and the mystic light spreading from it. They all witnessed the apparitions making their way up the seven thousand steps and all could hear the tonal note resonating in the wind. Etain reached out to the stone, its words came alive and sang out and all could hear them, even those within the town.
Many fell to their knees believing Kyne herself was invoking some type of ancient right to announce the coming of something important. What they did not know. Etain became aware again. She was glowing along the edge of her body. She turned and said, “That was unexpected. Someone needs to speak with the people in the town to calm them. Tell them that the stones recognize their daughter, she that is of the Alessian blood and has come to make the sacred pilgrimage to Kyne’s sacred mountain top.”
The Champion of Kyne said, “I will go and speak with them then join you along the path. It will be easier for them to believe a monk and someone who appears as a priest.” Etain said, “Go and return to us once you have done what you can. “Rosenlyn asked, “Did your mother and father not say anything about this?” Etain replied, “No sister, but I remember the both told me that none can do what you are meant to do. They said the world will react to you in ways no one else could do.”
The continue to follow the apparitions still making their way up the seven thousand steps. As they came up past the first stone there as a giant frost spider sitting there blocking the way, but a bit confused by the spectacle that is sense as the apparitions passed it and it could do nothing to capture them.
Etain saw it and raised her hand in the air and flicked her fingers is a sign and the spider was thrown off the path down into the river that flowed down and away from Ivarstead. Etain said, “It will survive another day. It simply won’t be happy to have taken a sudden bath.”
The came upon an unexpected stone near where the spider had been. A pillar of sorts and it lit up as well as Etain approach it. From it came the resonant words of the Dovah and she instantly learned some new form of the language that was deep in its resonance and power.
Rosenlyn asked, “What type of stone is this, I have seen them before scattered wide and far across Skyrim, but none have resonated for me like they did for you.” Etain replied, “They are a gift from Kyne. She has created them as a means for the most dedicated of the Dragonborn to obtain knowledge of new forms of tonal resonance. For me though like the Emblems, they seem to recognize something in me that brings them to life and gives me the knowledge without the trials that others would have to do.”
Etain then said, “Come up the path, the second Emblem is waiting for me. We must continue to go.” They made their way up the path and saw a hunter watching them come. He asked Etain, “Who are you? Please, I must know!”
Etain said, “Watch and see and she laid her hands on the second Emblem, It came alive as the first one did. The hidden power of it brought to life by her blood. “The same took place and the apparitions continue to make their pilgrimage up the path.
The hunter said, “You are she. We have heard the stories of one who come to restore the Alessian bloodline, that of the Septims.” Etain released the stone and now glowing even more said, “Be at peace hunter, the blessings of Alessia and Kyne go with you.” The hunter said, “Be careful as there are packs of wolves, frost spiders, trolls and other things on your way to the Monastery of High Hrothgar. “
Etain turned and continued to make her way up the path to the third Emblem. As they made their way up a pack of Winter Wolves saw them but ran once Etain came. They felt her power, knew how it would end for them, so they cleared the way and left the path open to the third Emblem.
It was growing colder now as they were above the snow line. Over-and-over the Emblems all came alive and Etain was alive with new power and then they finally arrived at the tenth and final Emblem. After she touched it a warm light came down upon her and Kyne said to her, “Welcome home my sister.” They are waiting for you in the courtyard. The halls of High Hrothgar are empty so have your faithful come inside. There is no need to camp. They can enjoy the warmth of the Monastery. “
Etain turned to Rosenlyn and said, “It was Kyne, they are waiting for me in the courtyard. She said the halls have been left empty and the fires warm. She said for all of you to come inside, no one will forbid it. Tell the others, I have to go.”
Rosenlyn rushed forward, wrapped her arms around Etain and said, “I love you sister. Be careful, you know your brother is hidden somewhere up here. He will be watching for an opportunity.” Etain blew on her finger, and it lit up and then she kissed it and then touched the lips of Rosenlyn and said, “I will love you always sister. We have always been one by blood, but now we are bound by heart too!”
Etain turned and walked up the steps to High Hrothgar, opened the doors and stepped through to make her way across the great hall and to the double doors that led out to the courtyard and her destiny.
As Etain stepped out into the courtyard, the rest of her company led by Rosenlyn stepped into the hallow halls of High Hrothgar. She led them into the center great hall and then knelt down and bowed to a statue of Kyne, Talos, and Akatosh that was sitting on a raised area on the way to the courtyard. She came and all the others came and knelt as well on one knee. All bowed as she had. Then they heard her say in the language of the Dovah, “Un Lahney Mu Ofan Fan Hin Mon Ahrk Briinah. Kos Voth Ek Daar Sul”
A great light shone down through the skylights of the great room and they all heard. “We are already with her; we prepared the way for her with each stone she came to. We thank you all for your dedication to our daughter and sister. Be at peace, we will not forget those who gave so much to keep our daughter and sister safe. Make yourselves at home now, there are warm fires in the adjoining rooms and food that is ready for all of you. Wait here, she will return to you once she is done.”
Outside on the great practice area of the courtyard waited Paarthurnax and the Greybeards. They all watched as this lone figure whose edges were glowing with a great power approached them with hood drawn over their head and a great, curved sword sheathed upon their back.
The figure stopped before Paarthurnax and knelt to one knee. Then is slowly pulled back their hood and pulled forth their great flaming sword and placed it tip down into the cold snow and stone of this ancient place. “Zu’u Qiilaan Us Hi Dii Zeymah. Zu’u Los Fin Sos Daar Los Do Fin Kruziik. Zu’u Bo Wah Zin Hi Ahrk Fin In Do Fin Miir!”
Paarthurnax bowed his head and said, “Drem Youl Lok!” Greetings Wunduniik. It is I who should bow before you, my sister. Thus, your words do us great honor, “I bow before you my brother. I am the blood that is of the ancients. I come to honor you and the masters of the way.”
Paarthurnax bowed his head lower and Etain rose and came before him as the Greybeards watch on beneath hooded heads in silence. She took her finger and scratched a line across it. Her blood trickled out of this cut. She then kissed it and blew on it. It shone with a bright light that was blinding. She then touched her finger to his head and then leaned over to kiss him. An explosion of starlight fell from the vault of the heavens and fell upon them there in that courtyard.
Etain then said, “I have given you a part of my essence brother, so you know my heart is true. Let the blessings of the coming age flow through you for your dedication to all of those who proceed me in sacrifice so I may be here with all of you this day.”
Then a great booming voice could be heard, even by those within the halls of High Hrothgar. “Our daughter, who is our greatest treasure, and she that proceeds even the first spark of creation once again brings us honor and our tears fall now from the heavens upon you all. She has come not as a new Dovah, as there is much you could learn from her. Etain comes to gain your guidance, your wisdom. The path before her is long and the dangers are great. My first born has not given up his selfish goals of domination overall.”
There was silence then another spoke, “Our daughter bleads for all, she had sacrificed for all of those that proceed her to bring about a new age. One where we all stand as equals until the end of time.” There was a pause then another spoke that had not been heard in many a long age. “My sister, I who understand the sacrifices you make bless you. Know that Etain has fulfilled the covenant of our blood. She is the covenant reborn.” With that the ruby red crystals of her sword, tiara, and ring came alive with a bright blood light for all to witness.
All knelt now before her, even the Greybeards knelt down, humbled before her. Paarthurnax then said, “Father, Sisters and Brothers we will do all that she requires of us. We give our word, our blood if need be.”
High above hidden in the clouds Alduin watch this and he felt a new fear for the future he had chosen. He knew she was doing what he had not ever been able to do. Sacrificing all so that a new age could be birthed. He vanished then, returning to his hiding place amongst the ancient lands of Sovngarde. “
Paarthurnax then spoke, “Etain go and bring the others who have come with you. We would meet them and I cannot fit myself within those ancient walls. Yes, we know of the blade that is with you. We also know that she had sworn herself to restore the honor they once held when the trials of your journey are finished and you ascend to the Ruby Throne. She is welcome, as they all are.”
Etain entered the halls of High Hrothgar and found them waiting for her in the great meeting room. Rosenlyn came to her and said, “Etain we are your heart! What would you ask of us?” Etain said, “Come, they wish to meet all of you. You too Delphine. They know of your desire to restore honor to the Blades. Come follow me!”
They all followed Etain out onto the Great Courtyard of High Hrothgar. All of them saw Etain’s brother, the great dragon Paarthurnax waiting with the Greybeards on either side of him. They all stepped forward and Rosenlyn came to stand before Paarthurnax. He said, “Welcome sister, I had heard that Etain had one of our own who walked along side of her.”
Rosenlyn stepped forward and pulled out her blade, cut her hand, whispered to it. She kissed her bloody hand then place it on his head and said, “I am the blood of the Dovah, I am the bloodline of Septims, I am also wall the will never let harm come to my sister, Etain.” She looked at Etain and said, “It is time for the dance of the ages, come sister. Let us show them.
The group spread out in a circle to give them room. Etain and Rosenlyn both removed their armor and stripped down to their robes underneath. The great sword of the covenant was laid upon the ground. Khamira came forward and said, “You are about to witness the dance of the ancients. It has not been seen except by us since the old age of the Dragonguard of Elsweyr.
Etain and Rosenlyn slowly bowed to each other, their heads resting against each other, then the dance began. They moved through same movements but with added emphasis on trust, loyalty, honor and kindness.
As the dance continued, Etain’s tonal resonance brought the Dragonguard of old to life again. They came and bowed to these two warriors and then began to demonstrate as it had been thousands of years before. As they all watched this the Khajiit were in tears again to witness a more complete version of the dance.
Paarthurnax at one point raised his head high and cried out a loud command and other Dovah came. They landed around them all and watched as this ancient dance continued with the spirits of long ago Dragonguard dancing all around them. Each of them bowed to the dance then raised their heads roaring into the sky.
When Etain and Rosenlyn were done they sat back down on opposite sides of the sword. The tonal spirits disappeared and Paarthurnax said to them. “You have given the Dovah great honor this day sisters. Not all follow our brother Alduin in his angry and selfish pursuits of domination. They come to witness for themselves the covenant of old reborn. They are here to let you know they will be there when your needs are greatest. “
Etain and Rosenlyn rose and both came before each of the Dovah who had come and both bowed low to them, to show them their faith in what they had done. Both Etain and Rosenlyn came and kissed each of the Dovah on their foreheads.
Etain and Rosenlyn returned to the great circle and then Etain asked, “I hate to break up this party, but Rosenlyn would tell you how much I dislike large gatherings. I am after all, still a human, a shy reserved young lady. I would like to humbly ask, is there somewhere Rosenlyn and I can go to bathe. We would like to clean up before a meal is prepared and we all celebrate the blessings of this day. “
Angier came forward then and said, “I am Angier. I speak for the Greybeards. Come follow me and I will show you the bathing area where you can take the time needed to clean up, relax and have privacy while you do so.”
Both Celestine and Delphine came and said we will come and guard the way to the bathing area. Etain turned to Angier, could you show the rest to somewhere they can prepare a great meal for all of us.?” Angier replied, “Yes, of course and then he whispered to the other Greybeards and he said follow them. They will show you where everything can be found.”
Etain and Rosenlyn walk down the long hallway until they found the bathing area. Rosenlyn immediately began to laugh. Then she exclaimed, “Oh, by the Divines, my sister is finally going to have to overcome her shyness.” Etain called out, “Celestine and Delphine, make sure no one comes past you until we return. This is not like the baths at Dragonsreach. “
Rosenlyn had already disrobed and stepped down in the bathing area and took a seat. Come on Etain, I am your sister.” Etain replied, “Okay, I guess its time isn’t it but don’t expect me to not want privacy if the bathing area allows it in the future. Etain disrobed then sat on the stone bench opposite Rosenlyn. “
Rosenlyn said, “No, Etain, get your bottom over here and sit next to me. There are some things we need to discuss, and I don’t want to feel like I am screaming across the room. Etain smiled, then said, “You sure are demanding. You’re going to have to find a mate with a lot of patience to put up with you!” Etain stood up and came and sat next to Rosenlyn on the same bench.
Rosenlyn saw the scars on her back again. She asked her, “Do they still hurt Etain? “Etain looked at her and said, “Yes, the pain is always there, it is with me as a reminder all the time.”
Etain then said, “Okay, enough about my pain, what is it that concerns you?” Rosenlyn smiled, “You know it sure does stay nice and warm in here. I mean if you weren’t my sister I might want to!” Etain looked at her and said, “Rosenlyn, really!
Then she surprised Rosenlyn and leaned in and kissed her full on the lips. She wrapped her arms around her and said, “I know, I feel the same way, but I also have a lot of feelings for Hadvar.” Rosenlyn reached out and gently brushed her hair away from her eyes. She then leaned in and returned the kiss. Rosenlyn’s hand gently dropped down and touch her breast. Then she pulled back and said, “We need to stop before this goes too far.”
Etain said, “Hasn’t it already Rosenlyn.” They both then lost themselves in each other and all went silent for a long time as they quietly explored the range of their emotions for each other. Finally, Delphine called in towards them, “Is everything okay in there?” The pulled away from each other and Rosenlyn said, “Yes, were just discussing some concerns with each other. We’ll be out in a while.”
Etain said, “We shouldn’t have done that you know.” Rosenlyn replied, “Don’t be such a prude. Anyway, that was really good, I don’t think I ever felt so much intense emotion before. Thank you Etain. I think we both needed that regardless of where we both end up when we reach the end of this journey. “
Etain replied, “Agreed sister. I do love you so and I would be lost without you. Now, what is it you really wanted to speak to me about. We’re running out of time you know. “What now, Etain, what happens from here?” I am not sure yet. Let’s finish up here and rejoin the rest of them. We can discuss options with everyone. Maybe someone will have some ideas.
Rosenlyn said, “Yeah, I am especially hungry after all that, well you know!” Etain laughed, then said, “Come on let’s get dressed and then join the others.” They put on the under garments again and returned to where Delphine and Celestine where standing guard.
Celestine said if you go up those stairs, there is another door. All your clothes have been cleaned and there is a private area the Greybeards say is reserved and only those of the Dovah can enter it. They both walked up the stairs, then opened the doors and stepped through to a long hallway. They looked at each other and said, “Well let’s see what is here. “
They walked forward and found a bedroom with a statue of Talos in it and a ring and necklace carefully preserved there. Their clothes were laid out on a double bed. Sleeping quarters for tonight. “Come on let’s get dressed and then see what else is here.” Rosenlyn got dressed in her formal clothing first and went up the stairs then down the hallway. She called out to Etain, “Hurry up, you need to see this!”
Etain finished getting on her formal clothing and went down the hallway and stepped into an area full of robes and there in one room was a beautifully carved statue of Kyne. Rosenlyn said, “Shor must have had his hands full with her. Look at how pretty she is. “Etain said, look this appears to be a place of meditation. Let me take a moment to give thanks to our sister.
Etain knelt on the mat and began to give thanks quietly to Kyne. As she knelt in silence giving thanks to her, a light suddenly appeared and then Kyne spoke to them both. My sisters, thank you both for gracing me with your prayers. I honor Etain by giving you more of the ancient words of the Dovah. May they serve you in the long journey still ahead.”
There was silence then and Etain felt the words of the Dovah coming alive within her. Then Kyne said, “Sisters, you should continue to find solace in each other when the need is great. Long is your journey ahead and you will both need the time together to bind more closely over that period.”
Rosenlyn smiled, “She said, “I don’t know Kyne you know what a prude your sister is. She might not…” Etain interrupted her and said, “Thank you Kyne. I would not want to do anything that might offend my sisters and brothers. “Kyne said that the needs of the Dovah and those of the bloodline are different. You both love each other so there is nothing wrong with the physical expression of it. Your sister Dibella is happy that you have found a deeper love between each other.”
Kyne then said, “Now go, the others are beginning to worry about you. Also, there are some new guests that have arrived as well. “They both got up and walked the hallway to the doors of the private library and came back through. Celestine and Delphine both said, “Come on, everyone is waiting for the both of you.”
They made their way into the area where the Greybeards would meet and discuss important events that took place in the world and on rare occasions it was used to host guests such as today. When Etain and Rosenlyn walked into the room they both immediately noticed that Maribelle, Collette, and Leoht were here.
They were surprised to see some new additional faces that appeared to be from the Psijic Order as well. Also, Elisf, Balgruuf, and other Jarls and their Stewards were in attendance. The room was packed with extra tables and chairs brought in but they noticed two empty spots left for both Etain and Rosenlyn to sit. Everyone rose as the two of them made their way through the crowds to take their seats. Food was already in place along with drinks including Etain’s favorite hot tea. Once Etain sat down Angier rose and the room grew quiet. Angier spoke to them all. “Today was an unusual day for those of us who have lived within these halls now for many long years in quiet conversations and meditation.”
“We have all had the privilege of being graced with Etain and Rosenlyn and of course all of you. We have learned of the hard journey that she has had to endure to reach our home. However, once here she demonstrated why she is the undisputed daughter of the Alessian Bloodline.”
“We have all seen the burden of what she bears for all of us. So, this dinner, these guests are here to thank you Etain and Rosenlyn for your dedication and commitment to bring about a new age for all races, whether they be Human, Mer, or Dovah. I understand that it has been tradition for Etain or one of those that travel with her to give grace before dinner. I ask Etain though considering the crowd how she wants to proceed?”
Etain stood up and said, “I welcome you all, many of you I know but there are many new faces as well. Considering the size of this dinner and the how hungry we must all be. I ask that you allow me to make a simple brief blessing. She lowered her head and everyone else followed suit. She did not reach out this time but stood there and waited in silence for a few moments.
Etain then spoke the words from the tenth Tablet or Emblem, “The Voice is Worship. Follow The Inner Path. Speak Only In True Need.” Etain paused then said, “Zu’u Zin Hi Ahrk Fin In Do Fin Miir!” Then she said, “I honor you all and the masters of the way! Let’s dine with the blessings of the Nine. “
The Greybeards had been given great honor by Etain for the second time in the day. It did not go unnoticed by them, and they were amazed at the humility that one whose power was that of creation would demonstrate such a humble stance before others.
After dinner was done Etain rose and spoke to them, “I am honored by all of your presence here tonight. Many of you I know, some I will come to know. However, today has been a day of great excitement and it has tired Rosenlyn and me so I will leave you all with this request for your consideration. We will retire soon to the quarters provided to us within the Great Library of Kyne that the Greybeards have provided access to for us.”
Etain then said to them, “I need your guidance, your help and determining where to from here. There is much to be accomplished, and I would have your wisdom guide me towards determine what needs to be done next and where do we go from here. This is not a test, but a true and heart-felt request to gain insight into all the possibilities that are before us.
Etain paused, “In the end, I will make that decision, but it will be based on all that we discuss after breakfast tomorrow. May the blessings of the Nine be with you this night and thank you all for coming. “
Etain turned to Rosenlyn and said, “Come on, I am so tired, let’s get some sleep.” Rosenlyn rose and as Etain passed by Hadvar she leaned over and pressed her hand against his heart and whispered, “One heart forever more…” He smiled and then she continued on. They retired to the Great Library of Kyne and Celestine and Delphine took up the roles as guardians.
Etain and Rosenlyn both helped each other get into comfortable sleeping gowns for the evening. They pulled back the warm fur and soft blankets on the bed and cuddled close to each other. Rosenlyn said, “I love you sister, sleep well my humbled sister. Etain replied, “It’s so nice and warm here, is it not?”
Rosenlyn replied,” Etain! Really your appetite has become, well surprising!” Etain leaned over Rosenlyn, began to kiss her gently on her forehead, then her cheek, then her neck and said, “Is that the best you can do?”
Then Rosenlyn felt Etain’s lips kiss her…, and they both became lost in a long embrace of pure love and passion. At some point they both had fallen asleep in each other’s arms and when morning came Rosenlyn said to Etain, “Sister I never thought I would say this, but I am going to be jealous of whoever it is that ends up with you at the end of this journey.”
Then Etain reached down and slid her fingers to Rosenlyn’s …. Rosenlyn said, “Etain really! But don’t stop! Their passions were both set free and then an hour later Rosenlyn said, “Let’s go get a bath, we both need to clean up after that night. We can’t go meeting for breakfast smelling like we just left the local brothel. “Etain replied, “Are you saying we smell, I mean all we did was sleep last night, right!”
Rosenlyn replied, “Come on, you have way too much of me rubbing off on you sister.” Etain giggled, “Yes, literally rubbing…” They both got up and came out of the doors Celestine and Delphine asked, getting cleaned up for the day. Etain said, “Yes, but we won’t be as long this time.” Both Celestine and Delphine smiled at each other. They were true to their word and returned to the chamber quickly, dressed and then headed to the room for breakfast and the discussion of what to do from here.
When they entered the room again, this time Elisif was waiting for them both. “May we have a private conversation before joining the others?” Both replied, “Yes, of course!” Then Etain said, “This way, I know of an area we can go that is private.” Elisif and Rosenlyn followed Etain up to near where the Greybeards sleeping quarters were. She then walked up a small flight of stairs to what was apparently a separate sleeping quarters set aside for who?”
There was a bed to the left, a chest, bookshelf, storage, and then a fireplace with a warm fire and a bench with a chair on either side of it. Beyond that and at the other end was another setup like that to the left. “Rosenlyn asked, “What is this area Etain?” Etain replied, “I believe it was used for new Dragonborn once they had passed all the trials and been accepted by the Greybeards. I also believe at times, rare times it is use for guests that come here. Anyway, why don’t you sit on the bench Elisif. We will sit in the chairs so we can hear what you have to say. “
Elisif sat down and said, “This is a nice cozy area.” Elisif paused a moment then began, “A while back the new mages of the Psijic Order you have seen in the room came to us in Whiterun. They told us they had been assigned to help. Of course you were already gone so the three of us and our Stewards took advantage of their unique transport abilities and used them to bring all the Jarls from the other holds and their Stewards to Whiterun for a conference.”
Etain asked, “This conference was for what purpose Elisif?” Elisif replied, “The three of us felt we needed to consolidate support for you here in Skyrim, so we had Hadvar tell us your story. It was so hard on him. None of us had realized how much all of you had already been through. We also did not understand how far you had traveled and everything that had happened to you.” It took days as Hadvar, you know he loves you Etain just fell apart emotionally. We had to give him time to recover. Several times actually!”
Etain stood up then and walked away into shadow staring at the wall. Both Elisif and Rosenlyn watched her closely. She turned back and sat back down. Both her cheeks were sopping wet with tears. “Elisif said, “I know Etain how hard this is for you and I am sorry, but I thought you need to know.” Etain replied, “It’s okay Elisif, please continue.”
Elisif said, “You have been named Thane of every hold in Skyrim with the exception of Windhelm. Of course, you know the reason why there was no representation.” Rosenlyn exclaimed, “Really! Every Jarl agreed to name her Thane of their holds?” Elisif replied, “Yes, how could they not after hearing of everything that had happened to all of you and especially to Etain.”
Etain stood up and sat down next to Elisif, leaned over and hugged her and said thank you Elisif. I know this must have been your doing. “Your welcome but you know I would do anything for the both of you. By the way, I don’t think the others will notice. However, I sense that the two of you have grown closer to each other in some way. I would advise you to keep that hidden, as we don’t know yet how much we can trust everyone. So many new faces. I still fear the Dark Court and their influences.”
Rosenlyn replied, “Is it that obvious?” Elisif replied, “I don’t think many would guess it but I see what others do not. It is a sort of gift I was born with apparently.” We need to return but I thought it was important for you to hear all of this. Etain, you’ll need to clean up those tears before coming back and put on a happy face again.” Elisif stood up and said, “I can show myself back, you too need a moment to put yourselves back together.”
Elisif stood up and left to find her way back to the breakfast area. Rosenlyn came over and sat with Etain on the bench. She said, “Etain, I feel terrible after hearing what Hadvar went through to tell our story. Maybe we shouldn’t have…”
Etain did not let her finish that thought though. She place her head against Rosenlyn and said, “No regrets Rosenlyn. What we have is between us, I don’t think we could make it to the end without us growing closer. What I feel for Hadvar, what he feels for me. That is separate. An unknown future of which neither of us know.”
Etain paused then said, “I spoke to him before he went to Whiterun about this, that even with all my powers, the flow of time creates infinite possibilities. I also told him though that if possible maybe there would be a time we could be together. However, none of us knew which choice would bring us to that place. I wanted him to know how much I cared about him though, just in case.”
Rosenlyn replied with cheeks now wet too, “Oh Etain, I hope that someday your wishes come true, and you get to have that simple life, a family, lots of children to come and give you hugs each day.” They held each other a moment longer then both stood up. Etain said come here, there is another place we can go from here to clean up before returning. It won’t take long.”
Etain led her through some other corridors and outside to a hidden area and there was a hidden bathing area kept warm with fires that never slept, warm clothing and towels to clean up. Etain said, “Come on, let’s get cleanup quickly and return. As Elisif said, we need to be wearing our happy faces.”
Another thirty minutes and both entered the breakfast area. Everything had been arranged in a way to allow conversations to be heard by everyone. Etain and Rosenlyn both happily greeted everyone and then Etain said, “Give us a few moments to grab a bite to eat and a few sips of hot tea and then let’s begin. I am ready to hear your input about what to do from here. “
The meeting began in earnest. Many voices were heard, many possibilities were discussed then after all was said and Etain and Rosenlyn quietly discussed them all, the Champion of Kyne came forward to where Etain and Rosenlyn sat and said, “Your sister and my patron would like to suggest something not discussed by the others. May she be invited to attend?” Etain replied, “Of course, in the future she need not ask though, you know how I dislike formalities.”
The Champion relied, “Of course but it was her insistence that because of the unusual mixture of guests here that she requested the formalities. As a cautionary position of course.”
Etain turned then and spoke, “My sister is requesting an audience with us here. I am letting you know Kyne is coming to discuss something of importance with us all.” An orb of light expanded above them all then an image, much like the tonal images Etain produces appeared in the center area.
Kyne looked around the room, then she said, “I have an important request of Etain. It will be dangerous but there are important entities involved that could become a great asset to Etain in reaching her goals. Hear me out, I will leave you to discuss it afterwards as I know Etain would not make this decision without wise consultation from all of you.”
“Far to the southeast lies an ancient fort. Its name is Dawnguard.” There were several gasps around the room. Mostly from the mages of the Psijic Order. Kyne continued, “Of course, I am not surprised to hear those of the Psijic Order gasp as they know its dark history. I will leave it to all of you to advise Etain and her trusted friends and advisors after I am done.”
Kyne looked at Etain now, “There is a new group there who is trying to restore the ancient order of the Dawnguard before it was tainted by the Dark Court. Leoht spoke then, “We have heard that there is a small group trying to rebuild the fort to its former glory when its primary purpose was to hunt and destroy vampiric clans.”
Rosenlyn’s hand grasped Etain’s and then Kyne said, “Rosenlyn, I see your concern for Etain’s welfare. It is rightfully expressed. However, if Etain decides to take this on she must go alone. Not even you Celestine and Delphine will be able to go with her. This is a very sensitive mission and much depends on Etain not being recognized for what she is.”
There was a pause of silence in the room, then Kyne continued, “Far to the north in the cold mountain region where the followers of Stendarr have their secret training home lies a secret that existed before the first empire of your mother was even an idea. There were those among these early entities that disagreed with the direction they were being pulled in. So, in secrecy one of their own were put to sleep deep with a place of secrecy. She has been asleep now for thousands of years and with her she has an Elder Scroll.”
There were loud gasps and exclamations from many in attendance then. “An Elder Scroll buried with her. Why asked Leoht and others.” Her mother did all of this to protect the world from what would become a war between the Dark Court and the Empire. It would be an open war that would throw all hopes of Etain ever being able to achieve her mother and fathers request.”
Etain said, “If they are that old and still alive then they are vampiric themselves are they not?” Kyne replied. “Your insight serves you well. Yet they are not just any vampires, but the mother and daughter are both Daughters of Coldharbour. They are pure blood vampires, actually not the first but darn near close to it.” Kyne pause a moment then continued, “Far to the North off the shores near an old fort occupied by the Thalmor and Dominion Regulars is an ancient Fortress where an ancient Vampire Clan lives. For years before the matriarch and father of the clan heard of the prophecy, they lived in peace, kept to themselves and that was the way it existed until the prophecy was discovered.”
Rosenlyn asked, “What prophecy is that?” Kyne replied, “That there is a way to find the Bow of Auriel and if tainted with the blood of a Daughter of Coldharbour, that they would never need to fear the sun again, and darkness would rule over all the lands. Malog Bal would love to see this occur as vampires are of course his creation. This matriarch is obsessed with this prophecy and see it as a way of ruling Nirn in eternal darkness.”
Kyne looked at Celestine then and said, “I bear sad news Celestine, already this clan has moved against your friends and family at the training home and grounds. All are dead, none survived. They took many vampires with them, but the home of Stendarr’s Beacon no longer exist. Etain stood up and ran over to Celestine to hold her. Delphine was there as well.”
Kyne then said, “I now that you would want to avenge your fallen friends and family. However, you have sworn yourself in service to Etain. The time will come when you shall have your chance to help Etain with a great battle that will likely occur before this business is over with. So, I ask you to restrain yourself and believe in Etain as the time will come.” Celestine composed herself. Then said, “Thank you to Etain and Delphine who were both there with her. Of course, my sword and my blood is sworn to Etain first and foremost.”
Kyne then spoke again, “Etain, this Daughter and Mother of Coldharbor can be saved, and become powerful allies. There are others as well that you will discover on this journey. One can be save, the other is beyond that and you will have to determine how to handle that if you decide to pursue this journey.”
She paused then said, “Etain, they cannot know who and what you are. To know that you are Dovahkiin is okay. They are aware of them and would not be surprised, but to know that you are the Covenant of The Alessian Bloodline would cause too much mistrust. You must allow them to believe the control you, especially when you first free the one buried in the ancient crypt. There are many possibilities and many paths available to you Etain. You will have to determine those in secret as you go. “
Kyne thought then and said your mother wants you to know it is important to earn the trust of this young Daughter of Coldharbour. To do that you must show her there is a different way. Earn it and change her heart and that of her mother. “
Kyne paused again in thought and then said, “This is a long journey Etain to take alone. It will take you across the lands of Skyrim both hidden and those unknown. You will meet many potential allies along the way. You will know them by their heart as you always do Etain.” I leave you all now to discuss it, but this journey will take months to complete. We will keep your friends and advisors appraised of your progress, but you cannot reach out to any of them until the final battle. Then you will need them all.”
With that Kyne vanished and Etain said, “Okay, I would hear your advice on this matter.” The dialogue between them went on for a long time. Etain gave voice to them all heard the points for and against and made sure all including those who were new and unfamiliar with her methods, had at least gained a better understanding of her.
She finally stood up and said, “I have heard you all and your advice for and against has all be vetted out with my mind. I have decided we cannot afford to pass this opportunity up. To leave such a danger in play could jeopardize everything we have worked for, everything those that proceeded me gave their lives for. “
As Kyne said, I will have need of you all before this journey is over. Be sure to prepare while I am gone. There are many here that can advise you to what I mean by that. Speak with them and give them the respect they have all earned to have journeyed with me to this point. “She turned to Rosenlyn and said, I need rest my sister come, let us retire for a while to our private chambers.”
They all watched them both as they left the room. Etain called out Celestine and Delphine, “Please resume your roles if you would.” Rosenlyn already had tears rolling down her cheeks when they reached the sleeping chamber. Etain wiped her tears away, kiss them, mixed them with her blood and then said, “Okay sister lie down, I need to do something that will allow you to follow me. You trust me?” Rosenlyn replied, “Of course I do but is this the right time for this.
Etain smiled and said it is the only way I can transfer this to you. Raise you legs, spread them. I will be gentle” Rosenlyn felt her hands slowly caressing, then separating then penetrating her in a way not done before, Etain knew she had to penetrate deep within Rosenlyn, then she leaned over and said kiss me as if both our lives depended on it.
She did so and Etain then thrust her bloody tear stain finger deep within Rosenlyn. Rosenlyn grabbed Etain and pulled her down closer to her and then she cried out,” Oh my, by the divines, what did you do Etain?” She remove her hand and pushed her legs down then she rolled over and whispered in her ear. “You are now pregnant with our child.”
Rosenlyn pushed her over and exclaimed, “What! That’s not possible Etain!” Actually, it is, and it was the only way I could give you the power to see and hear me while I am gone.” Are you sure, you mean I am actually going to have our child.”
Etain smiled and said, “Yes, I am sorry but for you to not go crazy while I am gone and do something insane that would endanger this journey. I knew that you had to have a part of me, a part of you merged. There was nothing else I could come up with in such a short time. Besides, just think, now you get to have a daughter and name her after me. That’s what you said you wanted right!”
Rosenlyn then said Etain, “What am I supposed to tell the others when I start showing.” Etain replied, “You tell them you are pregnant. You know you don’t have to tell them who the other parent is. Have fun with it, keep them guessing. By the time she is born it won’t matter anymore because all of this will be behind us. Or at least this part of it will. “
Rosenlyn dropped back to her back and said, “What are you going to tell Hadvar once they know.” There may still be a place and a time for Hadvar and I, but for now, welcome to motherhood Rosenlyn.” Etain rose herself up on her elbows and leaned over and said, “You make sure you take good care of our child. Promise me!”
Rosenlyn pulled Etain to her and they soon were lost in each other. Hours later they awoke and Rosenlyn said, “Come on Etain, we need to get you ready. Etain said before getting up. “As our daughter grows in you, your connection to me will become stronger. You will begin to see me, hear me, feel me but you must control your emotions. Remember, they cannot know until I near the end of who and what I am. “Rosenlyn said, “You know I will still miss you, My nights will be lonely without you.” Etain said, “Mine too Rosenlyn, “now come on, I need to prepare to leave.”
